  • Are you living your best bathtub life? What if we told you there was a way to turn a simple soak into something extraordinary?

But you could amp up the aroma with a scented salt instead or sub in coarse sea salt and baking soda. Visit your local supermarket or craft store to find bath salts for just a few dollars.

Each bath salt recipe makes approximately 2¼ cups—enough for two baths or a jar for you and a jar to gift to a friend who really needs to calm the F…loral down.

DIY garbage disposal fresheners

Ever wonder what that funky smell is coming from your kitchen sink? We’re not exactly sure what it is either, but we do have the solution—DIY garbage disposal fresheners!

This easy DIY takes less than an hour, including cleanup! It’s all natural and completely safe for the environment, and the fresheners will make your disposal smell as fresh and clean as a meadow of daisies!

Supplies:

Rosemary essential oil

1 cup baking soda

¾ cup liquid Castile soap

½ cup salt

30 drops essential oil

¼ cup water

Measuring spoon (we used a tablespoon)

Yield: approx. thirty 1-inch fresheners

Directions:

1. Combine baking soda and salt in a bowl.

2. Add Castile soap and essential oils. See our scent ideas below!

3. Add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the mixture reaches the texture of wet sand.

DIY Garbage disposal fresheners

YL tip: If you add too much water, the mixture won’t pack together or dry properly. Add more baking soda and salt to get the texture of wet sand.

4. Pack the mixture into the measuring spoon.

YL tip: To get your freshener out of the measuring spoon, tap the spoon lightly on the counteruntil the contents slide out. Be careful! The mixture hasn’t dried yet, so it might be fragile.

5. Let the fresheners dry for about 24 hours.

6. Store in a sealed glass jar, and keep dry.

To use:

Put 1-3 fresheners in your garbage disposal. Turn the faucet on a steady cold stream, and run the disposal for up to one minute.

Four tips for keeping your garbage disposal fresh:

  • Run it often, even when there’s nothing in it, to keep all its parts moving.
  • Always use cold water—hot water can melt grease, which causes clogs.
  • Avoid putting certain things down there, like grease, bones, large fruit pits, and foods that expand when wet, like rice or pasta.
  • Grind small pieces of food thoroughly by running the disposal for longer than you think—a few seconds doesn’t cut it.

Gardening + Oils

gardening and oils cover.jpg

So you’re a gardener…or maybe a startup gardener! Wherever you land, there are some basic things that seem to apply to everyone during the stages of their gardening journey.

Things like weeds, pests, and bad harvests show up in every garden, every year. But this class is going to be your ticket to tackling even the hardest of seasons. You’ll have tricks up your sleeve that will help you succeed from the day the seed goes in the ground ‘til the day you harvest it.

Using essential oils in the gardening process helps us garden in a way that results in fruits and veggies that have been lovingly cared for in the most organic way. You can even achieve that affordably, sustainably, and without the use of harsh chemicals, friend!

What are Essential Oils?

gardening what are oils.jpg

Essential oils are the chemical compounds that make up the lifeblood of a plant. They’ve even been referred to as the ‘immune system’ of the plant.

We are able to use them through the process of distillation after harvesting. The part of the plant with the beneficial chemicals (stems, leaves, bark, etc.) is harvested and sent through a very meticulous distillation process. Every plant needs a very specific distillation time and Young Living has 25 years of experience in that art.

After the plant is distilled a concentrated oil is the result. It is potent and loaded with uncountable benefits for your overall health and wellness. It is bottled, shipped to you, and then can be used topically, aromatically, or internally*!

The beneficial chemicals in the oils can be absorbed by your body (and the plants in your garden) to maintain optimal overall health and wellness. Because they are so concentrated, one little drop goes a loooong way! Wait until we get into the canning section of class – your mind will be blown!

*Young Living has an entire line of oils dedicated to ingestion called the Vitality line.

Seed to Seal

This is hugely important. Why? The FDA has almost no regulations and safety measures on the essential oil industry. The oils found in drug and big box stores, online, and even from other oil companies have been tested to find harsh synthetic fillers and chemicals. A cheap perfume grade oil is distilled at high pressure and high temps and usually with chemical solvents. This yields an adulterated oil that can still be labeled “100% pure”… which, in my opinion, is a scary thing!

Young Living decided to rise above that and create their own strict guidelines to ensure purity. It is called the Seed to Seal Quality Commitment. They abide by very strict guidelines to fulfill their promise in sending only the best products to your home.

  • plant material that is grown on corporately- owned farms or carefully vetted partner farms (that you CAN visit!)
  • sustainable farming and sourcing practices, providing the purest oil
  • great care taken to preserve and protect natural resources
  • hand-weeded fields and ZERO use of pesticides
  • oils that retain all their natural constituents and therapeutic properties
  • use of food-grade distillers with state-of-the-art design and distillation methods
  • low pressure and low temperature distillation, without the use of solvents or synthetic chemicals
  • rigorous testing on each batch by internal labs and third-party facilities
  • oils that are carefully reviewed through every step of production in order to meet or exceed industry safety and purity standards (beyond organic!)

And the best part… if the oils do not meet these high standards they are rejected and will not be bottled as a Young Living product. Now you can sleep tonight knowing you are getting the absolute best.

Check out more info on their Seed to Seal promise HERE.

Ready to Tackle the Outdoors

It’s no secret that bugs can totally ruin your garden plans. From eating your plants to taking a bite out of you, they can really dampen any gardening dreams!

You could use insecticides or sprays made from harsh chemicals, but certainly at a cost to you and the environment. They can lead to bioaccumulation of toxins in your body (and even in your plants) that are linked to chronic illness and disease! Yikes.

Fortunately, Young Living recently released an Insect Repellent that has been tested to repel mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas using 100% naturally derived, plant-based ingredients. Pure sesame oil and a carefully selected blend of essential oils traditionally used for their bug-repellent properties come together to make up all 99% of the active ingredients in this formula. The other 1%? Vitamin E. That means you can use it on your little ones and not worry about the synthetic chemicals used in many traditional repellents. You’ll also love the pleasant, citrusy aroma and smooth, non-sticky application.

If you’re more of a DIY kind of person, try this easy Outdoor Spray recipe! It can be used on you OR your plants! #HowConvenient

Pets & Your Garden

Now, what about the pets we love and adore but can’t seem to keep out of our gardens? As much as we love them, let’s face it, they can get into the garden and cause quite a mess.

A simple and safe way to encourage them to stay away is by using scents. Dogs dislike the smell of Black Pepper and cats dislike the smell of Rosemary. Therefore, they’ll choose to stay away from areas with that scent. And if you didn’t know already, those essential oils exist! Perfect!

Unwanted & Unpleasant Growth

You can waste SO many hours on weeds. Summer is short enough, let’s not spend unnecessary time dealing with weed overgrowth! If you’re trying to get rid of unwanted plant growth that doesn’t involve harmful chemicals (linked to so many neurological, hormone, and overall health imbalances) just know there are some safe alternatives. Weeds HATE Cinnamon so try your hand at this easy DIY.

‘Wither the Unwanteds’ Spray

Add 25-50 drops of Cinnamon Bark in a 4 oz. glass spray bottle. Top it off with distilled water. Shake and spray at offenders. Douse roots and leaves as needed.

Sometimes ‘unwanted friends’ begin to grow on our beloved plants. That can cause poor growth, bad harvests, or even plant death. They can block the pores of the plant responsible for breathing and eventually choke out the plant completely. They can also steal vital nutrients from the plants which significantly decreases the amount of your harvest! We don’t want that!

‘Plant Love’ Spray

Add 10 drops each of Tea Tree, Peppermint, and Citronella to a 4 oz. glass spray bottle. Top off with distilled water. Shake and spray along affected parts of the plant during your gardening chores!

Companion Plants

If you’ve been around the garden scene a while you’ve heard of companion planting. And if you haven’t heard, let me enlighten you! Some plants play well together; others do not. This is because every plant has certain nutrients that it uses from the soil for growth and fruit production. Also, plants excrete certain byproducts back into the soil that can either help or hinder your harvest!

If you grow two types of plants next to each other that both rely strongly on nitrogen for growth, they will compete and overuse the nitrogen in the soil and starve each other out! Corn and tomatoes are an example of plants that don’t play nice.

Conversely, if you plant two types of plants next to each other that eat different nutrients they will work together to promote each other’s growth. A good example of this is tomatoes and carrots. They work together in the soil. Therefore, plant them next to each other and it will result in a more bountiful harvest.

So what does this have to do with essential oils? Well, essential oils are made from plants so consider using oils in place of your companion plants. For example, if you are looking to plant Lavender next to Green Beans, grab your Lavender essential oil instead. Create a “Companion Spray” to use on the soil and leaves of the plant using this guide. Add 10-15 drops of the corresponding essential oil to a 4 oz. glass spray bottle. Top with distilled water; shake before each use. So easy!

Pollinator Party

Did you know that some plants self-pollinate? Fruits like peppers can stand alone and produce fruit. Not every plant does that. Lots of them need the help of cross-pollination between male and female plants! Know who helps with that?! POLLINATORS!

Bees and butterflies are some of the friendliest insects you can get into your garden! Without them you’ll have measly harvests and be disappointed that all your hard work didn’t result in the delicious produce you wanted!

Pollinators are attracted to the smell of flowers and luckily some of our wonderful essential oils are distilled from flowers… so convenient!

Create a spray using essential oils to spritz on the flowering buds of your garden to encourage pollinators to come in and get the job done!

Tending the Harvest

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… HARVEST SEASON! All your hard work and patience has paid off and you get to pluck delicious fresh food from the earth and eat to your heart’s content!

If you’re like me, sometimes I find that fresh produce goes bad before I can eat it. That’s because bacteria rests on your fruit and without the support of a plant, the fruits and veggies break down and can grow nasty spots on them.

As you can see, it’s important to always wash your fruits and veggies! It keeps you and your family from ingesting yucky things the produce may have tagging along.

Young Living has an exclusive Thieves Fruit and Veggie Soak (and a spray!) that you can use for this very reason. Soaking the food loosens the dirt and other crud and rinses it right down the drain.

You can even make your very own “produce soak’ with a sinkful of warm water and several drops of Thieves and Lemon essential oils. Super simple! Another tip I have for keeping your harvest fresher for longer is to clean your storage containers! The amazing Thieves Dish Soap contains no sulfates, dyes, formaldehyde, phosphates, or synthetic perfumes and has a delightful citrus scent. It’s one of my favs!

And has anyone ever noticed that once the fruits and veggies get in the house those pesky winged creatures magically appear?! Try out this simple diffuser recipe, using your essential oils, to keep yourself sane.

Canning Season

In order to can 30 quarts of spaghetti sauce you will need a lot of oregano… LOTS. Buying dried organic oregano adds up very fast in order to achieve the flavor you want in your recipes.

But remember when we talked about how essential oils are concentrated liquid forms of a plant?! You better believe that means they pack a big flavor punch for each drop you use! For one LARGE pot of spaghetti sauce I use 2-3 drops of Oregano Vitality essential oil as opposed to much larger amounts of dried oregano. That’s it! It goes so far and has such a rich and pure flavor. Save money AND use a high quality ingredient. #WinWin

Young Living has an entire line of Vitality oils, not just Oregano. There is a great selection of herbs and spices (and even citruses). PLUS they are all Non-GMO certified. That’s huge!

Love for the Gardener

You know we love our plants when we are willing to break our backs, scrape up our fingers, and endure biting bugs in order to give them the best chance they’ve got!

Young Living knows you’re just as important as your precious plants and has a whole host of products to help you care for yourself, too!

Muscle Love

Stiffness can be a thing of the past when you use a Deep Relief Roll-On or Panaway on sore muscles. Simply roll or drop the oil on the area that is giving you grief. Use as needed!

Skin Love

Lavender is an oil no gardener should ever be without! It may help cleanse and soothe minor skin irritations so keep it on hand. It also can be soothing to the skin after a day in the sun. If you forget to apply your outdoor spray, don’t worry. This roller recipe will be just what you need!

Simple, natural holiday DIYs the whole family will love

usage & safety

self care usage.jpg
 (Moderate)

AROMATICALLY: Put 6-8 drops of an oil or a combo of oils in your diffuser. The diffuser will send the oil into the air and fill the room with your essential oils.

TOPICALLY: Apply essential oils to your skin.

Diluting first is recommended. A conservative dilution would one drop of essential oil with 10-15 drops of coconut, grape seed, or almond oil and then apply it to your skin.

Citrus oils like Lemon are photosensitive. Please avoid sun exposure for 12 hours after application to areas where you have applied citrus oils topically.

Avoid putting essentials oils in the eyes or ears directly.

INTERNALLY: Young Living oils are pure and are labeled as Generally Regarded as Safe by the Food and Drug Administration. Because of their purity, some men like to ingest their oils to avoid “smelling” like an oil, or to support their body from the inside out.

immune-boosting tea

RECIPE

  • A full mug of warm water
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 drop Thieves Vitality
  • 1 drop Lemon Vitality
  • 1 drop Peppermint Vitality

Stir the vitality oils with the raw honey and drink.

Thieves Vitality supports your immune system. Lemon Vitality supports your body’s natural detox process and supports your digestive, respiratory, and immune systems. Peppermint Vitality supports a healthy digestive system. This combo is a sure way to stay above the wellness line!!

cinnamon-scented pine cones

“Incoming smells are first processed by the olfactory bulb, which starts inside the nose and runs along the bottom of the brain. The olfactory bulb has direct connections to two brain areas that are strongly implicated in emotion and memory: the amygdala and hippocampus. Interestingly, visual, auditory (sound), and tactile (touch) information do not pass through these brain areas. This may be why olfaction, more than any other sense, is so successful at triggering emotions and memories.

The holiday season can likely bring back some really wonderful memories. Cinnamon is a popular scent during the season. If you have had cinnamon around during past holidays and have had great experiences, then when you smell cinnamon, you will likely be brought back to those good memories. You can, of course, sub out any essential oil for the cinnamon. Pick a scent that brings you back to a warm, cozy, happy place.

RECIPE

1. Soak pine cones for about an hour to get rid of critters if you got them from outside.

2. Lay the cones out on a foil-lined baking sheet and pop them in a 200º oven for about 30 minutes. This helps the cones open up.

3. Once they have cooled, place them in a ziplock bag. Sprinkle about 30 drops of Cinnamon Bark essential oil on the cones in the bag. Cinnamon bark/Clove is also a great combo.

4. Let them sit in the bag for 1-2 weeks. Place in your favorite holiday bowl and enjoy the amazing holiday scent!

cinnamon citrus cider

Young Living’s vitality line is perfect to flavor drinks, especially the citrus oils. Citrus oils are cold pressed from the rind. This means the essential oil lacks the citric acid that the pulp juice contains. Citric acid can be hard on your enamel and tummy; it also has a tart flavor. Keep this in mind when you are using citrus vitality oils. The essential oil will give a slightly sweeter flavor like the zest of a lemon.

RECIPE

  • 1 gallon apple cider
  • 10 drops Lemon Vitality
  • 10 drops Orange Vitality
  • 3- 5 drops Cinnamon Bark Vitality (Test with each drop to see how strong you want it)
  • 4 cinnamon sticks

Add it all to a crock pot or a pot on the stove for a cozy evening drink. Avoid styrofoam cups.

holiday room spray

Replace synthetic and harmful air fresheners with homemade, natural, safe, and effective room sprays. Things like air fresheners are filled with fragrance to make them smell good and cover up odors. The problem with “fragrance” is it can be a lot of chemicals mixed together to create a scent like “White Willow” or “Spring Breeze.” According to the EWG, fragrance is rated as of “Some Concern: skin irritation/allergies/damage, acute aquatic toxicity, respiratory effects, biodegradation.” The non-flammable propellant found in air fresheners presents “Moderate Concern for respiratory effects.” The good news is that you can make your own room spray for a fraction of the cost, without harmful ingredient! In fact, it contains ingredients beneficial to your wellbeing!

ROOM SPRAY BASE

  • 8 oz water
  • 2 oz witch hazel
  • Oils of your choice – see suggestions below

Cozy By The Fire

  • 20 drops Orange
  • 15 drops Cinnamon
  • 10 drops Clove

bath salts

BENEFITS OF TAKING A BATH

1. LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE

The warm water of a bath can slightly raise your heart rate, increasing oxygenation and circulation. It can also lower your blood pressure for those without prior heart disease.

2. REDUCES PAIN AND INFLAMMATION IN JOINTS

Bathing loosens and relaxes the muscles, soothing aches and pains without any adverse effects.

3. DECREASE STRESS AND IMPROVE SLEEP

A bath before bed can reduce the level of stress and anxiety in the body and improve your mood. This increased relaxed state can calm your nervous system and improve sleep.

4. REDUCE SUGAR LEVELS

Reduce sugar levels from extra holiday desserts. A recent independent study has shown that bathing may reduce sugar levels in the blood, which could help people who suffer from diabetes to manage their weight better.

5. IMPROVES IMMUNITY

Taking a hot bath can kill bacteria and improve immunity. It can also promote slower deeper breaths, increasing oxygenation and improving circulation

6. CLEANSING AND MOISTURIZING

Hot water opens our pores and causes us to sweat, which is the body’s natural way of cleansing itself. Bathing with Himalayan bath salts stimulates circulation, hydrates the skin, increases moisture retention, promotes cellular regeneration, detoxifies the skin, and helps heal dry, scaling, irritated skin.

ADD SOME AROMATHERAPY TO YOUR LIFE AND YOU WILL BE A WHOLE NEW PERSON!

Aromatherapy is using the scents of oils for your wellbeing. As you learned earlier, essential oils have the ability to pass through the olfactory bulb and head right into the brain where your memories are held. They can help calm occasional stressors AND release memories and emotions, bringing you into a calmer state. This is both needed and wanted more than ever during the holiday season.

TRY THESE OIL COMBOS

  • 4 drops Northern Lights Black Spruce & 4 drops Frankincense
  • 4 drops Peace & Calming & 4 drops Stress Away
  • 2 drops Lavender, 3 drops Cedarwood, 4 drops Gentle Baby
  • 4 drops Roman Chamomile & 4 drops Frankincense
  • 3 drops Frankincense, 3 drops Sandalwood, & 3 drops Lavender
  • 2 drops Ylang Ylang & 4 drops Stress Away

HOLIDAY TIP: Put bath salts and essential oils in a cute clear ornament for a simple yet practical gift.

hot toddy

RECIPE:

  • 1 drop Lemon Vitality
  • 1 tablespoon mild honey
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 oz (2 tablespoons) bourbon
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • Black tea bag (optional)

Add one drop Lemon Vitality essential oil to honey and stir. Mix in lemon juice and bourbon. Top off with hot water. ENJOY!

dryer ball snowman

This is the perfect gift for anyone! Who doesn’t do laundry!? Plus, it is such a cute way to provide a safe and effective way to soften and freshen clothes. Fabric softeners and dryer sheets contain chemicals like benzyl acetate (linked to pancreatic cancer), benzyl alcohol (an upper respiratory tract irritant), and other chemicals that are known carcinogens, and neurotoxic. These products are intended to get trapped in your clothes, which means they rub on your skin constantly, seep into your pores, and get into your body. These toxic chemicals can cause all kind of health problems. It’s time to cut out those dryer sheets and fabric softeners and make the easy switch to dryer balls. Gifting them is a great way to share health with your friends!!

Write a little note and let them know, “This little snowman will replace the need for dryer sheets. Mr. Snowman eliminates toxic chemicals hiding in your dryer sheets. Toss him in the dryer with your clothes. When the laundry is dry, pull the wool balls out, apply 3-5 drops of oil to the wool balls, toss them back in and tumble for 5 minutes for soft fresh scented clothes.” Include a bottle of any essential oil you wish.

DIY Scented Pine Cones in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Prep Your Pine Cones The only downside to collecting pine cones from outside is they’re likely to have dirt, sap, or even small bugs on them. But don’t let that deter you. It’s easy to clean them. Simply give the pine cones a good rinse in the sink. You can use Thieves dish soap or just water. The scent from the store bought dish soap will linger (and possibly interfere with the oils) so I don’t recommend using anything other than Thieves.

Then, place the pine cones on a foil-lined cookie sheet. Bake them at a low heat (roughly 200 degrees Fahrenheit) for about an hour. Baking works to preserve the pine cones, opens them up and gets rid of any creepy crawlers. Keep an eye on them throughout the entire baking process to be sure they do not burn. While it is unlikely that they will burn, it is important to take them out immediately if it looks like they are. Finally, remove them from the oven, and wait for them to cool before proceeding to the next step.

  2. Apply essential oil(s) to scent your pine cones, choose any essential oils that you like. While many people prefer to use Christmas Spirit or cinnamon because it’s associated with the fall and winter months, other good options include Citrus Fresh, vanilla, peppermint, and even pine essential oils (Scared Mountain or Winter Lights). You can apply just one type of oil, or you can mix and match. For instance, cinnamon and vanilla blend together to form a pleasant, warming aroma. Place the pine cones in a gallon-size zip-top bag, and pour at least 10 drops of essential oil right inside. You can always add more drops if you feel the scent isn’t strong enough. Seal and shake the bag to spread the essential oil on the pine cones, and then leave them in the bag for a week. Finally, remove them from the bag, and make sure they’re dry before using them to decorate. You also can use a spray bottle for a quicker and more uniform application of the essential oil. Fill the bottle with a few ounces of water and about 10 drops of essential oil to start. (You always can add more.) Then, spray the pine cones, and place them inside the gallon-size zip-top bag. With this method, they only need to remain in the bag for about a day because they’ve taken a more direct hit of essential oil thanks to the spray bottle. Finally, remove the pine cones from the bag, and let them dry completely before placing around your home.

  3. Repeat as Needed Once the pine cones are out on display for a few weeks, they’ll start to lose their fragrance. You can continue to add essential oil as needed to refresh the scent. You don’t have to use the same scents that you previously used on the pine cones, as long as the previous scents aren’t detectable to the point that they clash with the new scents.

DIY garbage disposal fresheners

Lemon essential oil uses | Young Living
Thieves essential oil blend uses | Young Living

YL tip: To get your freshener out of the measuring spoon, tap the spoon lightly on the counter until the contents slide out.
